Oregon State University’s Jade Carey, Sunisa Lee from Auburn University, Lexy Ramler of the University of Minnesota and the University of Florida’s Trinity Thomas are the four finalists for the Class of 2022 Honda Sport Award for Gymnastics as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today. 

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 46 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”.  The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2022 Honda Cup which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network.

The gymnastics finalists were selected by a panel of coaches and experts from the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA). The Honda Sport award winner for gymnastics will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.  

Carey, a freshman from Phoenix, Ariz., was named the 2022 Pac-12 Gymnast and Freshman of the Year and is an eight-time First Team All-American. On the season, she won 47 individual titles, including 11 All-Around events, and already holds nine of the top-10 Oregon State All-Around scores. She ranked in the top 10 nationally in four events- All-Around (first), Bars (second), Floor (third), and Vault (sixth).

Hailing from St. Paul, Minn., Lee was named the 2022 WGCA Region Four Gymnast of the Year and captured the 2022 NCAA Beam event for her first NCAA title. The freshman is already a six-time WGCA First Team All-American and a First Team All-SEC and All-SEC Freshman team honoree. She became Auburn’s first SEC Champion since 1994 after winning Bars with a perfect 10.0.

Ramler is a three-time NCAA Region Two Gymnast of the Year and a three-time Honda Award finalist. The fifth-year senior hailing from St. Michael, Minn., has amassed 18 WCGA First Team All-America honors and is a seven-time Big Ten Champion, tying for first in school history. Overall, she has won 24 events this season and holds a share of four school records.

Thomas is the 2022 NCAA All-Around, Bars and Floor Exercise champion and a two-time SEC Gymnast of the Year. She is just the ninth gymnast in NCAA’s 40-year history to win three individual wins in a single championship and is the only 2022 gymnast with five First Team All-America honors in NCAA competition. Combined, she has 22 First Team All-America honors and is the UF career leader with 113 wins.

The CWSA, entering its 46th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs.
