Finalists for the Class of 2022 Honda Sport Award for Lacrosse Announced
Teammates Ally Mastroianni and Jamie Ortega of the University of North Carolina, Boston College’s Charlotte North and Emily Sterling from the University of Maryland are the four finalists for the Class of 2022 Honda Sport Award for Lacrosse as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today.

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 46 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”. The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2022 Honda Cup which will be presented during the live telecast of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards Presented by Honda on CBS Sports Network on June 27, at 9 ET/6 PT.
The lacrosse finalists were selected by a panel of coaches and experts from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The Honda Sport award winner for lacrosse will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
Mastroianni, a graduate student from Martinsville, N.J., was named a 2022 Tewaaraton Award Finalist and the IWLCA Midfielder of the Year. The midfielder is a two-time First Team All-American and set career-high marks this year in goals (48), points (57) and draw controls (136). She was recently drafted eighth overall in the 2022 Athletics Unlimited Lacrosse College Draft.
Ortega was named the ACC Attacker of the Year for the second straight year and is a two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist. The senior from Cenereach, N.Y., is a four-time All-American and UNC’s leader in goals (69), assists (44) and points (113). Her points and assists ranked sixth and seventh nationally, respectively. Overall, she finished her career first in ACC history and second in NCAA history with 466 career points.
Mastroianni and Ortega led UNC to the 2022 National Championship title.
North was the Class of 2021 Honda Award Winner for Lacrosse and most recently was named the back-to-back winner of the Tewaaraton Award. The Attack player from Dallas, Texas, is the two-time IWLCA Player of the Year and Attacker of the Year winning in back-to-back seasons. She ranked third in the nation in goals (92) and fifth nationally in points (115) while leading her team to its fifth straight National Championship appearance.
Sterling, a junior goalkeeper hailing from Bel Air, Md., was named the 2022 IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year and earned 2022 Big Ten Goaltender of the Year honors. A First Team All-American, she ranked second nationally in both save percentage (.531) and goals-against average (7.87) and set the Big Ten record for highest save percentage ever by a goalie with .626. She maintained a save percentage over 50% in 12 of 21 games and posted double digit saves in seven games.
The CWSA, entering its 46th year, has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.
