Elena Delle Donne from the University of Delaware, the WNBA’s first-round draft pick and second overall to the Chicago Sky, has received the Honda Sports Award for basketball and becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the 2013 Honda Cup.

4/8/2013:

After leading her University of Georgia team to a record-breaking NCAA 400-yard freestyle relay victory, 6-time Olympic medalist and Georgia senior, Allison Schmitt (Canton, MI) has received the Honda Sports Award for swimming and becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the 2013 Honda Cup, to be presented live on ESPNU, June 24 at the USC Galen Center Founder’s Room in Los Angeles.

In a season that included winning Pac-12 Player of the Year, AVCA National Player of the Year and All-American honors, and leading Oregon to its first trip to the NCAA Div. I Women’s Volleyball Championship Final, senior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma (Chandler, Ariz.) has received the Honda Sports Award for volleyball.

After a 2-year absence from the national championship, 2-time All-American midfielder, Crystal Dunn (Rockville Center, N.Y.), led the North Carolina Tar Heels to a 4-1 victory over Penn State at the 2012 NCAA Women’s College Cup and has received the Honda Sports Award for soccer.

After taking last year off from Princeton University to train with the U.S. Olympic Field Hockey Team, 4-time All American midfielder, Katie Reinprecht (North Wales, PA), led the Tigers to their first-ever NCAA Field Hockey National Championship and has received the Honda Sports Award for Field Hockey.

Chris Voelz, an ambassador, steward and former Leadership Gifts Officer of the Women's Sports Foundation and a former athletics administrator at the University of Minnesota and University of Oregon, was named executive director of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards, to succeed Dr. Judith Holland, who will remain with the organization as managing director.

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards announced the retirement as executive director of collegiate athletics' trailblazer, Dr. Judith Holland effective September 1. Holland, the non-profit organization's first executive director, will remain with the organization as managing director through a transition period, and a new executive director will be named by the CWSA Executive Committee.

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) confirmed today Brittney Griner of Baylor University, Teresa Noyola of Stanford University, and Keilani Ricketts of the University of Oklahoma have been named the Top Three finalists for the 36th Annual Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious Honda Cup, to be announced live on ESPNU on Saturday, June 23 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

Now in its 36th year, The Collegiate Women Sports Awards program recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding female athletes in NCAA-member colleges and universities around the country.  The program’s highest honor goes annually to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year, who is awarded with the prestigious Honda Cup. Past winners include Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Mia Hamm, Lisa Fernandez, Misty May, Courtney Kupets and Candace Parker.   

For the first time in it’s history, the Collegiate Women Sports Award Presentation will be filmed live on national television.  Here’s how you can be a part of the ceremony and support the athletes who are being recognized.  

who:   The Collegiate Women Sports Awards will celebrate the “Best of the Best” Top Three finalists for the 2012 Honda Cup, the Honda Division II & III Athletes of the Year, and Honda Inspiration Winner.
