– Sheila Reid 06/16/2011 – Sheila Reid, a senior at Villanova University, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in track and field, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. The honor was based on the results of national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 35th year. Reid, who also won this year’s Honda Sports Award for cross country, recently capped her college career when she was crowned the NCAA Outdoor Champion in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter races – the first woman in history to win both events in the same year. II ATHLETE OF THE YEAR –
Sammy Macy 06/15/2011 – University of Massachusetts Lowell Division II field hockey senior standout Sammy Macy has been voted the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in her division. Macy, a native of Tewksbury, MA, captained her team to an undefeated 24-0 record and a national title this season. Macy scored a single season school-record 30 goals and 76 points, as well as the single game school record of five goals and 11 points. III ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
– Kendra Stern 06/15/2011 – Amherst College’s Division III swimming senior standout Kendra Stern has been voted the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in her division. Stern, the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year, is a 10-time NCAA individual champion. The Albuquerque, NM native is the NCAA record holder in the 100, 200, and 500-yard freestyle. She is a 3-time NCAA relay champion, holds six NESCAC records, 10 school records, six Amherst pool records and five NESCAC Championship meet records. Stern has 12 individual NESCAC titles, is a 3-time NESCAC Swimmer of the Year. She qualified for the 2012 Olympic Trials in three events. SOFTBALL
– Kelsey Bruder 06/14/2011 – Kelsey Bruder, a senior at the University of Florida, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in softball, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. A native of Corona, CA, Bruder led the Gators to the 2011 Women’s College World Series this year, where they were defeated by Arizona State in the championship series, marking the team’s fourth straight WCWS appearance – the first SEC team to accomplish the feat. She was named to the 2011 WCWS All-Tournament Team and is a two-time All-American (2009, 2011). She was selected 2011 SEC Player of the Year, as well as a two-time All-SEC selection. The two-time USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week, ranked sixth in the NCAA in runs per game and 19th in the country in home runs in 2011. She had two walk-off hits in Florida’s series over SEC rival Alabama, enabling the Gators to take the series. She had strung together a career-long 14-game hit streak in 2011. Read More... |

TENNIS
– Jana Juricova 06/08/2011 – Jana Juricova, a junior at the University of California, Berkeley, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in tennis, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. A native of the Slovak Republic, the 5’ 11” Juricova captured the title at the 2011 NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championships this spring, marking her advance to five consecutive national singles championship matches. She is a three-time ITA All-America certificate recipient and has achieved a 36-4 record in singles with 20-1 mark in dual matches this season. She also advanced to the NCAA doubles semifinals this year and posted a 41-7 record in doubles, with an 18-4 mark in duals. She is a three-time Pac-10 All-Conference first-team selection, eclipsing the 100-win mark in singles and doubles this year. She holds a 119-17 career record in singles for three seasons, 109-25 in doubles matches. Last fall, Juricova received a preseason No. 1 ITA singles ranking, opening her pre-season with four straight wins over ranked opponents to advance to the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship title match. She also advanced to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship singles final, collecting seven singles wins over ranked opponents. LACROSSE
– Shannon Smith 06/07/2011 – Shannon Smith, a junior at Northwestern University, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in lacrosse, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. Smith, a native of West Babylon, NY, is recognized as one of the best offensive players in the nation. She led the Wildcats to the NCAA championship this year, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal in the national semifinals and championship game. She is the Division I leader in points per game (5.57), and ranks fourth nationally in goals per game (3.74). She was named MVP of both the NCAA and American Lacrosse Conference Championships. Smith set a new Northwestern single-season goal record last season with 86 goals and was ranked second in all-time single-season points (128). Her 128 points on the year ranks as the seventh best ever in Division I play. She was a recipient of the Tewaaraton Award this year and scored at least four goals in all five post-season games, with 18 total in the NCAA Championships, the second best ever for a single tournament. – Marta Silva Zamora 06/01/2011 – Marta Silva Zamora, a junior at the University of Georgia, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in golf, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. The honor was based on the results of national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of The Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 35th year. Silva Zamora is the fourth University of Georgia athlete to receive the Honda Sports Award for golf, following Terri Moody (1981), Cindy Schreyer (1983) and Vicki Goetze (1992). A native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Silva Zamora was ranked #1 most of the spring and shattered the University of Georgia stroke average, finishing at 71.51 and bettering former Bulldog and current LPGA Tour member Taylor Leon's mark of 72.63 established in 2006-07. She recorded 22 par-or-better tallies in 33 rounds played this season, finishing a cumulative 15-under par. She collected her third—and Georgia's 44th – All-America certificate from the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). She was named the PING National Player of the Year this spring by the NGCA, and was selected as first-team All-America by the NGCA. AWARD – Jessica
Breland 05/25/2011 – Basketball star Jessica Breland, a 2011 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and current forward for the WNBA’s New York Liberty, has been named the 2011 recipient of the 23rd annual Honda Inspiration Award. This award is given each year to a female college athlete who has overcome adversity to excel in her sport. Breland was a clear standout in her first three years as forward for the UNC Tar Heels. As a sophomore, she was named the ACC Sixth Player of the Year and finished her season sixth in school history in career blocked shots with 123, including 74 in 2007-08. In her junior year she appeared in all 35 games and started 27, scoring 31 points in a 2008 game against Oklahoma and turning in a 23-rebound performance against Duke. She averaged 14 points, 8.5 rebounds and an ACC-best 3.1 blocks to rank seventh nationally. Then in May 2009, following a history of ailments including asthma and severe allergies, Jessica visited a doctor for a sore throat that wouldn’t seem to go away. Hours of tests led to a biopsy the next day, and ultimately a diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma was confirmed. While forced to redshirt the entire 2009-10 season, Jessica gradually got her weight back up by eating as many times as she could with a plan devised by the team trainer and a nutritionist. She courageously returned to the court for the 2010-11 season. Despite dealing with six months of cancer treatment, Jessica attended all her classes and maintained a 2.99 GPA while carrying a double major in communications and African-American studies. GYMNASTICS
– Kayla Hoffman
04/14/2011 – Kayla Hoffman, a senior at the University of Alabama, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in gymnastics, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female gymnast. Hoffman is the sixth University of Alabama athlete to receive the Honda Sports Award for gymnastics, following Penney Hauschild (1985 and 1986), Dee Foster (1993), Andreé Pickens (2002), Jeana Rice (2004) and Ashley Miles (2006). A native of Union, NJ, Kayla Hoffman clinched this year’s NCAA crown for the University of Alabama with a 9.95 score on her floor exercise. Individually, she was the NCAA runner-up in both the all-around and balance beam competitions. She earned three first team All-American honors in 2011 for a total of five in her college career. She was also named SEC Gymnast of the Year and Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year – the first athlete ever to earn both honors in the same season. As team captain this year, Hoffman led her squad to the SEC title, winning the vault competition with a 9.95 score. The NCAA Central Region Gymnast of the Year, she also won the all-around, vault, uneven bars and floor exercise at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regionals. She is a former USA National Team Member and a standout scholar, earning an SEC Postgraduate Scholarship as well as being a three-time Scholastic All-American. BASKETBALL
– Maya Moore 04/14/2011 – Maya Moore, a senior at the University of Connecticut has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in basketball, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. Moore has been nominated for the Honda Sports Award for basketball all four years of her college career and won the honor last year. Notably, because she also went on to win the Honda-Broderick Cup last year, signifying Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year honors, she now has a shot at making history as only the second athlete ever to repeat as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Tracy Caulkins, a swimmer from the University of Florida, won the top honor twice (1982 and ’84). Moore, who was recently named the #1 draft pick for the WNBA and was chosen by the Minnesota Lynx, was born in Jefferson City, Missouri and grew up in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Read More... |

SWIMMING
& DIVING – Katinka
Hosszu 03/31/2011 – Katinka Hosszu, a junior at the University of Southern California, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in swimming & diving, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. A native of Hungary, Hosszu was the only swimmer to win three titles at this year’s NCAA championships, including the 200-yard IM, 400-yard IM and 200-yard fly. She set an NCAA meet record in the 400-yard IM and led her team to a third place finish at the meet. She was named Swimmer of the Meet at the NCAA as well as at the Pac-10 Championships, where she won the same three titles (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 Fly). She is a five-time 2011 All-American, adding 400-yard and 800-yard medley relays honors at NCAAs for a total of 13 NCAA wins for her career so far. Hosszu twice competed for her native country in the Olympics (2004, ’08). She holds four individual school records plus her part of three relay records and is a five-time champion at the 2010 U.S. Short Course. VOLLEYBALL
– Blair Brown 01/12/2011 – Blair Brown, a senior at Penn State University, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in volleyball, designating her as the nation’s top collegiate female athlete in that sport. This is the third year in a row that a Penn State University volleyball player has been honored with the award, and the fourth time in school history. Previous winners include Lauren Cacciamani (2000), Nicole Fawcett (2009) and Megan Hodge (2010), who went on to win last year’s Honda-Broderick Cup as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. A native of Purcellville, VA, Brown led the Penn State University Lions to their fourth straight NCAA championship title as team captain in her senior year, scoring a match-high 18 kills in the national title game. A three-time AVCA All-America, she was named Big Ten Player of the Year, as well as the University Park Regional Most Outstanding Player. In addition to earning the NCAA Championship as part of the All-Tournament Team, Brown started all 37 matches in her senior year and led her team with 521 kills (4.24 kills average per set on .320 hitting). She closed out her college career with 1,295 kills, graduating in December 2010 with an English and Political Science major. – Melissa Henderson 12/21/2010 – Melissa Henderson, a junior at the University of Notre Dame, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in soccer. A native of Garland, TX, Henderson led her team this season to its third NCAA championship and was named 2010 NCAA College Cup Most Outstanding Offensive Player after assisting on a game-winning goal in the championship match. This year, she scored 17 goals and dished out a career-high 11 assists en route to a career-high 45 points, making her one of three players in the nation to be in the top 20 for goals (6th), assists (20th) and points (4th). So far in Henderson’s career, she has scored 52 goals, the 11th player to do so in school history, and 18 assists for 122 points (15th in school history). In 2010, she was named first-team All-American, first-team All-Northeast Region, Big East Offensive Player of the Year and by unanimous vote, was named first-team All-Big East. HOCKEY – Katie O'Donnell 12/09/2010 – Katie O’Donnell, a University of Maryland senior, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in field hockey. A native of Blue Bell, PA, O’Donnell led her team this season to the NCAA Division I Championships and was named the NFHCA Division I National Player of the Year. She was also named National Player of the Year and Offensive MVP by womensfieldhockey.com for the third consecutive year. O’Donnell led the nation in points this year (99) and assists (34), making her the first player in NCAA history to break the 100 career assist and the 300 career point marks. She concludes her college career with at least one goal and one assist in 17 of 24 games her senior year and had seven games in which she recorded three or more assists. She netted her seventh career “hat trick” (three goals in a single game) this season. In 2010, she became the only player in NCAA history distinguished as both a four-time first-team All-American and four-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year. She is the ACC's career points and assists leader and leaves Maryland with 99 total college career goals, just three goals away from the ACC all-time goal record. Prior to her two consecutive wins of the Honda Sports Award, she was nominated her freshman year. An elementary education major with a 3.238 GPA, O’Donnell has been a member of the U.S. Senior National team since 2005 and is currently the captain of the U.S. Junior National Team. Read More... |

COUNTRY – Sheila Reid 12/08/2010 – Sheila Reid, a Villanova University senior, has won the 2011 Honda Sports Award in cross country. A native of Newmarket, Ontario, Reid led her team to an undefeated 2010 season and its second straight NCAA Championship. She captured her first NCAA national cross country crown by a two-second margin, the closest finish in NCAA women’s Division I history. She also took first place two years in a row at both the Mid-Atlantic Regionals and Big East Cross Country Championships. She is a five-time All-American as a cross country and track athlete and this fall was named the cross country National Female Athlete of the Year, as well as earning Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year accolades for the second straight season.
